Leadership Institute alumna Tamara Martin reflects on her experience in the 2021 cohort

Leadership Institute is YNPN Chicago’s premiere leadership training program for emerging nonprofit leaders. Over the course of ten months, a cohort of Chicago’s promising nonprofit leaders come together to challenge each other, collaborate, and build relationships to serve them beyond the program. Additionally, participants are paired with an experienced nonprofit leader as a personal mentor and network with monthly guest speakers.

Applications for the 2022 cohort open on November 1st! Read more from one alumna of the 2021 cohort about their experiences as part of Leadership Institute.

Tamara Martin is the Operations Manager at Girls in the Game and an alumna of the 2021 Leadership Institute cohort.

When I began YNPN Leadership Institute, I was expecting to learn something along the lines of general management skills and how they could be applied to my current job. Leadership Institute turned out to be so much more than a conventional professional development course. I did not anticipate all that I would gain from my ten months in the program. I became a part of a community that was supportive, innovative, and kind, and always met every challenge with sincerity and humor.

My definition of “leadership” has completely changed. Working together with my cohort, we explored all sorts of different themes, such as communication skills, talent investment, workplace culture, and possible career paths. Additionally, my matched mentor was such an important part of the Leadership Institute experience. Her advice and encouragement had a big impact on the way I now view myself as a leader. I looked forward to every session with my cohort and my mentor, and always left with so many new ideas and the motivation to explore them.

I highly recommend Leadership Institute to anyone who is looking to be challenged and explore their leadership journey; all while collaborating with a group of insightful nonprofit professionals. Stay tuned for the application to become part of the 2022 cohort!
