YNPN Chicago Board Member Spotlight with Sabina Wee

Sabina Wee, Donor Care Manager at Marillac St. Vincent Family Services, Programming Co-Chair at YNPN Chicago

How did you first become interested in a nonprofit career?

I was fortunate to be given a chance to rethink about my career path when I moved from San Diego to Chicago. At the time, I was considering applying to grad school and making a difference by conducting Autism research. However, when I realized grad school might not be for me, I took a step back to evaluate how I can bring about positive changes in my community while doing something that I enjoyed. Evaluating my current and past volunteer experiences, I realized that I loved advocating for and empowering those in need. That’s when I took a leap into my nonprofit career and have enjoyed every bit of it.

What are you most looking forward to as a new YNPN Chicago Executive Board Member?

I’m looking forward to working with motivated and talented leaders of the Chicago nonprofit community. Being on the YNPN Chicago Executive Board is a unique opportunity in which we can strengthen our community by working collaboratively with one another. I can’t wait to see what we’ll be able to do this year.

Who is your professional mentor and why?

My professional mentor is my Director of Development, Tracie Frederick. Since I’ve been working in her department, she’s helped me to grow professionally in many ways.  I’ve learned to stay humble in triumph and positive in disappointment. She welcomes new ideas and isn’t afraid of change. She truly cares about her staff and the clients that we serve and I’ve absorbed a lot of her passion. Her great attitude makes her an amazing leader and I’m not afraid to ask her for advice on anything!

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

My favorite thing to do outside of work is exploring all the different restaurants in Chicago. My husband and I are fascinated by the variety of delicious restaurants in the city and are constantly researching and gathering suggestions about which ones to try out. It’s a great way to get to know the city while doing what we love — eating.

If you could travel to any place in the world, where would you choose?

My husband and I have been dreaming about traveling to Italy. We were both fortunate enough to visit Italy as children with our families, but would love to go back and experience it on a different level as adults. We fantasize about eating pizza in Naples, drinking wine in the countryside and becoming immersed in their culture. One day!
