How did you first become interested in a nonprofit career?

My mother set an excellent example for me as a child! Although we did not have much growing up, she was always helping our extended family and youth in the neighborhood. I thought everyone should have someone like my mother in their life to help them succeed.

With her as my role model, it was only natural that I follow in her footsteps of helping others. When I went to college, I continued my mother’s legacy by participating in service projects with my sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho. It was an incredible feeling to know that I was doing something good for my community and I thought why not make it a career.

Today, I continue to follow my mother’s example by operating blaqueandblue.com, a community blog dedicated to supporting African Americans coping with depression and anxiety

Who is your professional mentor and why?

I have two professional mentors. The first is my mother who has taught me to never give up on my dreams no matter how hard life may become. She did not start with much, but with perseverance and determination she has made it further than anyone thought imaginable.

The second is Hilda Marshall, Mentoring Program Coordinator at Kelly Hall YMCA. She has dedicated her life to helping kids on the West Side of Chicago. Her passion inspires me to be the best I can be every day!

In your opinion, what is the most pressing issue facing the nonprofit and social impact sector in Chicago?

I believe one of the most pressing issues nonprofits face is retaining talented employees. As nonprofit professionals, we are often asked to perform many jobs for the benefit of our organization. It is easy to feel stressed or burn out quickly, which is why I believe in maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

When I am not working, I love to read books, discover new blogs, and explore different restaurants in Chicago.

If you could travel to one place in the world, where would you choose?

I love to see communities come together to have a great time. That being said, I would love to travel to Brazil during Carnivale!
