CommuniCamp , is an open space “unconference” sponsored by The Community Media Workshop, a Chicago based group that “connects the community with media to promote news that matters. CommuniCamp will focus on skill sharing on a range of communication topics from all media: journalists, nonprofit communicators, bloggers, ethnic media, publicists, social media mavens, videographers, funders, publishers and more.

This full-day event will be facilitated by Jean Russell, founder of Nuture.biz, and includes a kitchen table discussion with successful new media entrepreneur Adrian Holovaty from EveryBlock.com about the future of news, the changing role of reporters and journalists, and how the rest of us may figure in this new media landscape.

    Goals at CommuniCamp are to:

    • Share a deeper understanding of the blending of traditional media and PR and Web 2.0 integrated marketing through collective resource sharing.
    • Provide networking opportunities and bring together the wisdom of many experts participating in the conversation.
    • Genuinely empower participants (rather than passive observers, people who attend are in charge of their experience and conversations).

Community Media Workshop, founded by a journalist, Hank De Zutter, and a community activist, Thom Clark, is a small institution that encourages the media to tell the stories of the real Chicago , the oft-neglected neighborhoods and back streets of Chicago , where the problems are felt most deeply and where solutions are most likely to be born. The Workshop trains people working on these problems to tell their stories to the media, tips sensitive journalists to the importance of these stories, and tries to create better relationships between the media and the diverse communities that make up Chicago and the Midwest .  Now housed at Columbia College , Community Media Workshop continues its mission and reach by providing a range of online blogs and communications platforms for nonprofit communicators and journalists.
