Committee Information Sheet


Thanks for your interest in serving on a YNPN Chicago Committee. Committee participation is a fantastic opportunity for anyone interested in getting more involved in the Chicago nonprofit community, helping to shape a new and growing organization, and working to build a stronger sector. Committee membership is a chance to grow personally and professionally, to develop skills, experience, and connections that will aid in your career development, and to be part of a team of other fun, passionate, motivated young people.

What are YNPN Chicago Committees?
Young Nonprofit Professionals Network of Chicago (YNPN Chicago) committees consist of a mix of Executive Board Co-Chairs, At-Large Directors and YNPN Chicago members. Committees are overseen by one or two co-chairs. The committees work to fulfill the mission of the organization: YNPN Chicago strengthens the nonprofit community by providing accessible professional development, resources, and networking opportunities for young professionals involved in the Chicago-area nonprofit sector.

YNPN Chicago enhances the impact of the Chicago-area nonprofit community by:
    • Attracting talented young people to the sector; 
    • Supporting nonprofit professionals in their work; and 
    • Developing current and emerging leaders in the field.

What are the qualifications of committee members?
We are looking for nonprofit professionals who possess:
    • Passion for the development and potential of YNPN Chicago and the
    nonprofit sector 
    • Willingness and ability to contribute time and energy to the advancement
    of the organization 
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills 
    • Ability to work well independently and on a team 
    • Creativity, initiative, responsibility, and organizational skills

 
What are the responsibilities of committee members?
Committee members commit to one year of service, unless s/he is part of a special task force. Members must attend committee meetings and participate in regular YNPN events and programs. Committees generally meet monthly via conference call or in-person. Meeting schedules are arranged under the guidance of Committee Co-Chairs.

Each committee member also works independently and collaboratively outside of scheduled meetings to complete the responsibilities of their position. Members must reapply to the committee or potentially the Executive Board at the end of each term. As a thank you to committee members, the charge to attend the Annual Celebration will be waived.

 Program Area & Committee Positions & Responsibilities

 
Communications Committee
• Internal Communications Committee members develop and write articles for the YNPN Chicago eNewsletter; collect relevant articles and other news related to the nonprofit sector; assist in examining the feasibility of a YNPN Chicago Blog; and aide in the dissemination of YNPN Chicago specific event and organizational communications. 
• External Communications Committee members assist in the development of marketing and promotional materials for YNPN Chicago; develop press releases and media contacts; respond to inquiries about the organization; and work on a “spread the word” campaign about YNPN Chicago to new audiences.


Programming Committee
Committee members help plan, organize and execute professional development, social, and service events targeted towards three key audiences: persons new to the nonprofit community who are seeking basic skills seminars; persons who have been working in the nonprofit sector for 5-10 years who would benefit from more advanced seminars and workshops; and persons who are seasoned professionals in the sector who would benefit from opportunities that would help them excel as leaders. Specific responsibilities include: assist with the development and implementation of professional development, social and service events (brainstorm topics, identify venues, recruit speakers, etc.); monitor and refine the program calendar; and assist with the achievement of related strategic plan goals.


Technology Committee 
• Social Media / Membership Engagement Committee members are responsible for building an on-line community and moderating the discussions that take place there; committee member should be very familiar with social media and an active participant online. 

• Video Blog Committee members should have experience in social media and/or online moderating with experience in video-blogging who regularly video blogs and posts to their own site (or contributes to a community site). Responsible for filming their experience as an YNPN Chicago member, film at YNPN events and recap their experience afterwards. These videos can then be uploaded onto our now mostly static YouTube account.


Finance Committee  Committee member serves as an advisor to the Finance Chair on Quickbooks software as well as helps to draft a YNPN Chicago Finance Manual, including Policies for Purchases, Expense Reimbursements, Check Card Usage, Acceptance of Gifts/ Donations, etc. and to create the related forms.


Fundraising Committee Committee members are responsible for assisting in the development and execution of YNPN Chicago’s Fundraising Plan and works on gift processing and policy, stewardship and acknowledgement activity as well as strategy development; specific expertise in grant prospecting and writing is desired.
